wrong wrong wrong.
First, Siddartha Gautama (Buddha) didn’t teach ANYTHING about reincarnation or life after death. When asked, he simply said,”I don’t know. I’m not dead yet.”
His teachings were about how to live NOW, not about eternal reward/punishment.
Second, he didn’t speak of “salvation”, only of ending (or reducing) suffering.
He taught 4 truths (my simplification):
1. Man is unhappy.
2. He is unhappy because he is selfish (always wanting).
3. To be happy, stop being selfish.
4. To stop being selfish follow the 8fold path.
The 8fold path basically consisted of:
-be aware of your thoughts
-have worthy goals
-watch your mouth
-act right (don’t kill, steal, lie, be adulterous or get intoxicated)
-have a proper livelihood (one that causes no suffering)
-try your best
No real “religion” in there, at least in terms of speaking of “supernatural” or “spiritual” matters.
I kind of boil down even further:
Simply, stop being a jerk and you’ll be happier.
Act right, pay attention to what you’re doing, and sit still once in while to reflect.
The outcome of following this path is not only to being happier, but being more aware of your connection to other beings, and, thus, causing less suffering to them, as well.
Of course, that fat kid’s teachings were twisted INTO a religion, much like a lot of what Jesus seemingly intended has been twisted in mad, right-wing, fundy nonsense, as you are well aware.Edit1:16 pm
